In collaboration with the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Grupo Singular developed a training program for businesses in the region.

Integrating different productive sectors (aquaculture, livestock, tourism, fishing, commerce, construction, manufacturing, and soon green hydrogen); diversifying the economic matrix; and promoting productive performance that aligns with natural conditions while providing not only economic growth but also regional development—these are the main challenges currently facing the Magallanes Region, according to Mauricio Ojeda, Manager of Grupo Singular. To address these issues, he highlights the importance of strengthening productive chain processes to link regional SMEs with industries, as well as facilitating training opportunities that allow them to reach a “higher operational standard.” With this in mind, the consulting firm developed the training program “Pathways to Business Expansion”, specifically for this sector. The program is co-financed by Corfo and executed in partnership with the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (Mexico). It is free of charge, consists of 20 chronological hours, and is delivered in an asynchronous online format. The program aims to promote greater process systematization and expand business perspectives towards new opportunities.

The idea emerged in 2017, according to Ojeda, and coincided with the development of a project to strengthen the regional ecosystem through innovation and technology transfer. “Understanding that ecosystems function like gyms, it was important to establish methods to develop the muscle of innovation competencies. To achieve this, I sought an internationally recognized institution capable of transferring methodologies to us, which led me to the Monterrey Institute of Technology.” The program was launched in June and is accessible through the Coursera platform, as well as the websites of Grupo Singular and Corfo.

Assessment: Opportunities Exist

“SMEs that do not continuously improve, fail to incorporate technology, and do not optimize their processes face significant competitiveness issues,” explains Ojeda, highlighting one of the program’s key objectives. This comes at a time when multiple opportunities exist and can be leveraged. “Today, many large companies have unmet needs that cannot be fulfilled with the current capacity in the region, forcing them to seek these competencies elsewhere. While it may be challenging to absorb 100% of this demand, there is still significant room for growth,” he illustrates.

Additionally, talent concentration poses another challenge, particularly for remote regions that face disadvantages compared to the central areas of the country. Despite this, Ojeda believes that “this is a great moment for the regions, as digitalization and innovation can help promising initiatives thrive, regardless of their geographic location.” He sees low population density as both an opportunity and a challenge but insists that collaboration is essential for progress.

“It would be a mistake for large companies not to integrate their value chain with the local environment and fail to develop regional talent. However, it would also be a mistake for professionals, institutions, and local SMEs to expect to be included or hired simply because they are from the region. The most successful development occurs when efforts are made collectively and when there are higher levels of competition,” he concludes.
