A study will assess the feasibility of implementing an industrial hub adjacent to the green hydrogen production valley and its derivatives projected for Magallanes. The objective is to evaluate the attraction of industries that require the use of renewable energy, green hydrogen, or other derivatives, as well as the provision of services for the regional industrial sector.

Through an initiative promoted by the “TeamEurope Renewable Hydrogen Development (RH2)” Project in Chile, co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BWMK), and implemented by the German agency GIZ, a study has been launched to analyze energy-intensive industries with the potential to scale up in the case of companies in Magallanes, or relocate in the case of companies from other regions, with the support of the Transforma H2V Magallanes Program and the execution by the regional company Grupo Singular.

The feasibility of implementing an industrial hub adjacent to the green hydrogen production valley and its derivatives projected for Magallanes will be evaluated, aiming to attract industries that require renewable energy, green hydrogen, or other derivatives, as well as the provision of services for the regional industrial sector.

Rodrigo Vásquez, national coordinator of the RH2 Project, explains that hydrogen production hubs or valleys in Magallanes can generate significant co-benefits for other companies and productive sectors. These industries can utilize the inputs available in the H2 valleys to decarbonize, innovate, and create jobs for the region, becoming local users of hydrogen projects in Magallanes.

The study is currently in its initial phase, characterizing key stakeholders and assessing potential sectors that require these resources, along with estimating the projected demand for inputs in the green hydrogen industry, including electricity generation, oxygen, water resources, green hydrogen, green ammonia, and synthetic fuels.

To ensure an adequate collection of information, the contribution of companies and their projections is crucial, as it will help identify sectors with the potential to be attracted to the region, facilitating productive transformation within the territory in a coordinated manner.

“As the Transforma Regional H2V Magallanes Program, executed by Corfo, co-financed by the Regional Government, and with the technical advisory of the Ministry of Energy, we were invited to be the technical counterpart of this study. This allows us to contribute from the territorial perspective, cross-reference information with other studies we are also part of, and take a broader view of the impacts this study may have across all areas of our Roadmap,” said María José Navajas, Regional Director of Corfo Magallanes.

Ana María Fuentes from Grupo Singular expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in this important initiative promoted by GIZ, highlighting its significance for the country and the region’s leadership in this field.

Finally, Mauricio Ojeda, Manager of Grupo Singular, stated: “This is a valuable exercise to assess the vast opportunities that can arise in our region, always with a vision of sustainability, respecting our natural conditions and the uniqueness of our identity. The success of this effort will largely depend on the collaboration and openness we find among key industry stakeholders.”
